#DThink Twitter Chat Recap: How Internal Communication Impacts Employee Engagement

May 07, 2015 by Bruce Jones, Senior Programming Director, Disney Institute

Think about the communication that happens in your workplace every day…from verbal to non-verbal, to email to voicemail. Whether the communication is from colleagues or the organization as a whole, is it of high quality and does it bring value to you as an individual? Does it help you to be more successful in your role? Most importantly, how purposeful are you in your communication to others?

As we have seen, organizations often underestimate the importance of communication in the workplace, yet communication continues to be one of the single most important determinants of employee engagement and organizational effectiveness.

At Disney Institute, we believe that when it comes to fostering employee engagement, an organization must be just as intentional about its employee communication as it is with its external communication. Why? Because, high-quality communication can actively reinforce culture, while low-quality communication can undermine culture.

During our most recent D’Think Twitter Chat (held the first Wednesday of every month), we had excellent dialogue with our community about this topic. Questions and answers were based on the curriculum from Disney’s Approach to Employee Engagementour professional development course that teaches participants how to foster strong employee engagement and company culture within their own organizations.

A number of fantastic insights were shared throughout the chat. Click here for a full recap, or below we have shared a few highlights from the discussion:
