How Disney Evaluates Cultural Fit in Job Applicants

Employee selection is as much about finding the right fit for the candidate as it is for the employer.

Finding the right person for a role is a challenging, costly, and time-intensive process, not just for the employer, but in many cases, for the applicant as well. Thats why every Human Resources department emphasizes (or should emphasize) the importance of making the right decision the first time.

How do you know that youve made the right choice?

The answer, of course, is that you can never be certain that the selection will be the perfect fit for you team until the new hire is fully integrated into their role. However, thats not to say there arent processes organizations can embrace to help avoid a poor fit.

At Disney, we believe that the selection process must include deep cultural immersion. That means communicating to potential applicants what the organization values before they ever submit an application. Here are a couple ways Disney does just that:

Start with the recruiter. The majority of the communication, especially initially, will come from a recruiter on the companys behalf. Because they make first contact with the candidate, they must embody the culture you are hiring for. This person will be more likely to identify a good cultural fit from your applicants.

Be our Guest. Disney doesnt make a distinction between Guests in our theme parks and Guests who are applying for a role at the company; they are all our Guests. Demonstrating the desired behaviors, the way we expect Cast to treat others, lays a foundation for service expectations of new hires.

Make it immersive. The only way your selection process can work is if it becomes so deeply immersed in culture that someone will self-select in or self-select out depending on whether or not the culture is the right fit for them.
