An empowered team is a wonderful thing to behold! Ms. Trembley's pre-requisite, however, is essential. There must be clearly defined objectives and outcome expectations. Absent that a strong team can lead themselves in a different direction that wastes time and effort.

While I have seen teams begin work without a formal leader, inevitably, an informal leader will emerge. This doesn't mean that all teams and groups must have a designated leader; however, having a formalized leader may help the group get through the initial socialization stage quicker and begin to work through their project.
